Calicut

The name Calicut is the English version of Kozhikode which is one of the historically significant northern regions of Kerala. It is the capital city and the galtteway to Malabar.

The fourth longest river in Kerala – Chaliyar – originating in the Western Ghats forms the boundary between Malappuram district and Kozhikode for 17 km before it enters the city of Calicut for its final 10 km journey. The river embodies the memories of an ancient period when timber trade in Calicut was a flourishing business. The river was the lifeline waterway for carrying large timbers from the forests in and around Nilambur to the various saw mills at Kallai in Calicut.
